Bell's Palsy
Disorders of the facial nerve can occur with anyone. Since otolaryngologists (head and neck surgeons) have special training and experience in managing facial nerve disorders, they are the ideal experts to carry out a complete appraisal of abnormal movement or paralysis of the face. While the use of pharmaceuticals is common as part of the treatment, in certain circumstances, surgical removal of the bone around the nerve (decompression surgery) may be appropriate.
Common Injuries & Conditions
Facial: Surgical intervention may be called for to correct cracks in the sensitive bones around the sinuses, eye sockets, bridge of the nose or cheekbones. Lower facial injuries including the upper and lower jaws can make your teeth fit together differently. When our specialists perform surgeries to restore a normal bite, it can prevent visible scarring by operating on the inside of the mouth.
Nasal: Nose fractures may require surgery depending on the severity. Surgery is also encouraged in certain candidates to address breathing difficulties and internal and external deformities of the nose.
Neck: Neck injuries may involve specific structures within the neck, such as the larynx (voicebox), esophagus (food passage), or major blood vessels and nerves. Reliant upon their severity, they may require surgical intervention.
Throat: The larynx (voicebox) is a multifaceted component of the throat, made up of cartilage, nerves and muscles located within a protective tissue (cartilage) framework. If the cartilages are fractured or dislocated, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct them and to eliminate airway obstruction.
Head and Neck Tumors
A lump or sore that does not heal or dissipate, it may be harmless or it could be an indication of head or neck cancer. Throat masses may also be a symptom of thyroid conditions. It is recommended that you seek out an ENT if you experience a lump, mass, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and pain. Lumps may not indicate cancer, but it is critical to find out to begin treatment promptly. As a rule, malignant growths can be life threatening. Surgery is often the best option to remove them and can be used in conjunction with other therapies such as radiation and chemotherapy. Surgery is also an option to remove benign growths of blood vessels often referred to as hemangiomas, vascular malformations, lymphatic and arteriovenous malformations (AVM).
